The Challenge
The demands of today’s world have changed drastically, and the life skills required are very different. Without these important skills, students find it difficult to navigate their future.
So far, life skills were primarily being taught in an informal and unorganized manner, leaving students unprepared for the real world.
With the rapidly changing landscape of both society and careers, it is crucial that life skills are taught in schools at scale.
The Solution
SAF’s R&D Department researched on how life skills are integrated and taught within the school curriculum across different boards and countries, such as Finland, Canada and Singapore. The research showed that life skills is an integral part of education in these systems.
To bridge the gap in development of 21st-century life skills in government and government-aided schools following Maharashtra State Board Curriculum, SAF proposed to integrate various graded subjects for grade 9 and 10 into a new subject, ‘Self Development and Art Appreciation’ which would cover life skills, career guidance and art appreciation.
SAF developed activity-based textbooks which were then adopted by Balbharti and made compulsory, graded subjects for grades 9 and 10.

Curriculum features
Concepts such as self-identity, values, social leadership, conflict resolution, growth mindset, what careers mean, and facets of art appreciation are covered in Grade 9.
In Grade 10 students explore their role as citizens, effects of mass media, how to think analytically, how to work towards a career pathway and appreciating visual and performing arts.
Rather than simply conveying ‘information’, the entire curriculum is activity-based which makes it engaging for students.
Continuous evaluation is done by teachers using the assessment rubrics provided at the end of each chapter. There is no written examination for this subject.
